Mission
NCT Repertory Company provides a physically and emotionally safe working environment for actors ages 13 - 18 to explore and develop the craft of acting. NCT Rep. offers a learning space where young actors will gain the necessary knowledge and skills to find their own voice and personal methodology, enabling them to act with honesty and bravery.
Company Objectives
To introduce the student to acting techniques through individual and/ or group exercises incorporating skills such as observation, sense and emotion memory, concentration, and improvisations.
To use lecture and class discussion to familiarize student with the history and development of acting theories, selected examples of its various cultural contexts.
To attain a critical eye through in-class evaluation and written and oral reflection.
To gain more acting performance opportunities with the purpose of developing their craft and not for the sake of performance only. (Students will perform at some point during the year, remaining flexible with safety always at the forefront.)
To develop student’s appreciation of the theater, the repertory will take a day trip to New York City to see a Broadway play in June 2021 if possible, or, if circumstances do not permit, they will see a local production or hold a watch party in some form of a previously filmed live performance.
Details
Teen repertory is a yearlong commitment-divided into four semesters, three of which are focused on the curricular study of craft, and one of which (Fall) is performance based. See curricular breakdown below. Classes will meet weekly on Saturday from 2-5pm. Some mid-week rehearsals will occur when working on the Fall performance. The 2020-21 curriculum has been carefully designed with the ability to toggle between in person and virtual meetings if health guidelines dictate that necessity. Classes will be taught primarily by Artistic Director, Tara Gnolfo. Some guest artists may be invited in to cover specialty skills from time to time.
SAMPLE SEMESTER BREAKDOWN
Semester 1: SUMMER
August 1 – Sept. 5th
This first semester will introduce student to acting techniques derived from Stanislavski and adapted by Uta Hagen in her book, “A Challenge for the Actor.” Techniques such as observation, sense memory, emotional recall, and concentration will be utilized through individual monologue work and exercises describe in by Uta in her book. Each student will be assigned a monologue chosen for them by Artistic Director, Tara Gnolfo. Over the six-week-period, the student will prepare in class presentations based on the assigned readings from the textbook. Monologue work will be incorporated to the exercises as we progress.
Semester 2: FALL
September 14th - October 23rd
This is the performance semester. Rehearsals will begin week of September 14th (some weeknights, some weekends – I will work with my students to find the best schedule). Our Fall performance will depend very much on CDC guidelines and the current conditions surrounding the COVID 19 pandemic. We will either do a Film project or our traditional ShakeFeare Tragic Trail – TBD. We could also decide as a group to do a this in June instead. We will remain as flexible as to what work best for the group.
Semester 3: WINTER
December 5th & 12th & January 9 - 30
The third semester will cover script analysis. Working closely with the language of the play, we will explore ways in which the playwright drives a character’s motivation. Students will further this study through analysis of previously filmed productions of the material with which they have been working. Students will continue work on their monologues as they continue to learn more about the process of craft through further study of Hagen’s methods. Semester 4: SPRING Late May/ June The final semester will offer students the focused opportunity to practice and polish their craft. In conjunction with the typical class regiment of theatre exercises, improvisational work, sensory work & character development, they will complete the work on their monologues or scenes in a final presentation for an invited audience. If necessary, the final presentation will be filmed and streamed.
